Glenfiddich 15 Year Old
For this very popular expression a number of different elements are carefully married together, these being whiskies aged separately in European Oak Sherry Casks and American Oak Barrels, a proportion of these whiskies are then finished for 3-6 months in Virgin Oak Casks. These three components are then poured into a huge Solera Vat, a 37,000 litres Douglas Fir tun inspired by the sherry bodegas of Spain.
This Solera Vat, begun in 1998, is never fully emptied. After each time whisky is drawn of the the vat (never above 50%), new whiskies decanted from their original casks are then used to top up the vat. This process enables a greater level of consistency throughout the years.
From this Solera Vat, the cask strength whisky is then transferred into Solera Tuns (2,500 litres approximately) for a further settling period of at least 3 months – a method used by Glenfiddich for all of their whiskies.
Nosing reveals a creamy nose, blossoming with the scents of heather honey, stewed apples, blood orange, brambles, and crumbly vanilla fudge. On the palate dark fruits combine with fresh citrus oils, spiced ginger, cloves, raisins, and subtle notes of hazelnut. A medium length malty finish ebbs and flows with matured tobacco leaves.
