The Craigellachie Distillery was designed around 1890 by the renowned distillery architect Charles C. Doig who also invented the ‘pagoda’ style ventilators you see atop whisky distilleries. It is located at the confluence of the Spey and Fiddich rivers, in the heart of the Speyside region, with Aberlour, Macallan, and the Speyside Cooperage as its closest neighbours. Its water is drawn from springs on Little Convall Hill.
On the nose a salted smokey note reminiscent of small rock pools on a sandy beach and a bonfire some way away in the distance, orange peel citrus, rich vanilla oak, and a subtle backbone of dark fruits. On the palate its weighty complexity reveals itself upfront with salted caramels, lightly grilled fresh pineapples, soft brown sugar, subtle wild herbs, orchard fruits, and a clearly cracked pepper note. A long, dry, pleasantly minerally finish of gentle baking spices, bitter chocolate, a slight sherried sweetness, and at end a trace of fine elegant smoke.
