Armagnac

Armagnac is one of France’s oldest distilled spirits, originating from the Gascony region in the southwest and dating back to the 14th century—predating Cognac. Unlike Cognac, Armagnac is typically distilled only once using a continuous still known as the Armagnac still. This process retains more of the raw material’s character, resulting in a fuller, more robust spirit well-suited for extended aging.

The main grape varieties used in Armagnac include Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, and Baco. It is classified by aging categories such as VS, VSOP, XO, and vintage designations. Armagnac is often crafted by small family-owned producers who emphasize artisanal methods and terroir, offering rich profiles of dried fruit, spice, leather, and wood.
