Taketsuru Pure Malt will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2030. To mark this milestone, Nikka launched the five-year Essentials limited-edition series in 2026, with each annual release exploring a different aspect of Taketsuru's character. The inaugural Essentials 2026 focuses on the traditional coal-fired distillation method used at Yoichi Distillery since whisky production began in 1936, highlighting the toasty aromas and robust character of Yoichi's malt whisky.
Although this release focuses on Yoichi, it remains a blend of malt whiskies from both Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. It also incorporates a portion of long-matured malt whiskies distilled at both distilleries in 2000, the year Taketsuru Pure Malt was first introduced. The rich, full-bodied malt character of Yoichi is complemented by the softer qualities of Miyagikyo, maintaining the balance that defines Taketsuru Pure Malt.
Official Tasting Notes:
Nose: Malty and gently toasty, with aromas of baked biscuits, sweet-tart apricot jam and soft, mature oak.
Palate: Full-bodied and rich, with the natural sweetness of malt harmoniously balanced by the depth of peat, revealing a complex and layered character.
Finish: Long and pleasant, with lingering malt sweetness and gentle peat notes, followed by a subtle bitterness from the oak.
Taketsuru is Nikka’s Pure Malt series, honoring the legacy of Masataka Taketsuru, the father of Japanese whisky. Blending malts from Yoichi and Miyagikyo, it captures the power of Yoichi with the elegance of Miyagikyo, offering balance and depth.
Taketsuru studied distilling in Scotland, including at Longmorn, and his vision shaped the Nikka brand. The Taketsuru series is a tribute to that heritage, often serving as the gateway for enthusiasts to explore the world of Nikka.
