While it's labeled as a Secret Islay, keen eyes will surely recognize the distillery on the label. Paired with this particular angle, it subtly hints that this is a 27-year-old whisky from Laphroaig, offering exceptional value compared to official bottlings.
Tasting Note by Whiskynotes:
Nose: seaweed and mild iodine, with hints of bandages and rusty nails. There’s a sweet fruitiness underneath, mostly lemon juice and grapefruits, maybe melons and a hint of vanilla too. Then back to wet cement and dried herbs, with smouldering ashes in the background.
Mouth: sweet onset, with honeyed fruits like peaches, guava and creamy lemons. Some dried maritime notes, iodine, mint and herbal smoke. Chalky touches. Beach pebbles and subtly smoked tea.
Finish: long and slightly sharper again. Earthy, with some oak char, herbs and zesty notes.
Laphroaig is one of Islay’s most distinctive and polarizing distilleries. Since its founding in 1815, it has developed a cult following thanks to its unmistakable flavor profile—intensely peaty, medicinal, with notes of iodine, seaweed, and herbs. Its pronounced medicinal character has led many to describe Laphroaig as a whisky you either love or can never quite accept. The distillery maintains traditional floor malting and dries its malt with its own peat, preserving its unique smoky signature.
The most recognized expression is the Laphroaig 10 Year Old, a formative dram for many fans of peated whisky. Laphroaig has enjoyed royal recognition from King Charles III (formerly Prince Charles), further cementing its prestige. The distillery also pioneered the “Friends of Laphroaig” program, granting fans honorary ownership of a square foot of Islay land. Laphroaig stands not only as a benchmark for peat lovers, but also as a symbol of bold character in whisky culture.
Thompson Bros is the driving force behind Dornoch Distillery, founded by brothers Simon and Philip Thompson who are passionate about old-style whiskies. Their journey began at the family-run Dornoch Castle bar, where they developed a deep appreciation for pre-1960s whiskies. This passion led them to start as independent bottlers under the name “Black Isle Whisky Company,” eventually establishing Dornoch Distillery in 2016 with a mission to revive the golden era of whisky.
Dornoch Distillery follows a distinctive production philosophy, using floor-malted organic barley (such as Plumage Archer), extended fermentation of up to 216 hours, and custom-built wooden mash tuns with tiny stills. The distillery also matures its spirits in traditional-style warehouses to create complex and refined whisky. The Thompson Bros bottling range reflects their love for historic styles and has earned them a respected place in the world of independent bottlers.
