Tilo Schnabel, founder of German independent bottler The Caskhound, has long admired Glenfarclas's traditional style and is also a collector of the distillery's Family Casks series. On this occasion, he had the rare opportunity to visit the Glenfarclas warehouses in person, tasting and comparing whiskies from different casks during a Warehouse Tasting. He eventually selected Cask #2121 for this exclusive single cask release for The Caskhound.
This 11-year-old expression was matured entirely in a First-Fill Sherry Butt and is presented in a bottle design similar to the Family Casks range. Although it is not part of the Family Casks series, Tilo believes this single cask possesses the same rich sherried character that he particularly appreciates in those bottlings.
Reference Tasting Notes:
Nose: Rich aromas of raisins, prunes and dates, accompanied by malt, dark cocoa, caramelised almonds and Espresso, followed by spicy notes of cloves and cinnamon.
Palate: Full-bodied and oily, with rum-soaked fruits, black cherries, blackberry jam and rich dark chocolate, alongside notes of oak, leather and tobacco.
Finish: Long and warming, with the fruity sweetness gradually receding to reveal Espresso, walnuts, oak, allspice and nutmeg, becoming progressively drier towards the end.
Located in Ballindalloch, Glenfarclas has been owned by the Grant family since 1865, making it one of Scotland’s few remaining family-run distilleries. Known for its traditional sherry cask maturation, Glenfarclas produces rich whiskies with dried fruit, spice, and oak notes. The distillery houses six large stills and continues to use direct-fired heating for a fuller-bodied spirit.
Glenfarclas is famed for its high-age official bottlings, with expressions like Glenfarclas 25, 30, and 40 Year Old earning wide acclaim. It maintains a strong reputation for quality and value, offering bold, traditional whiskies that epitomize the sherried Speyside style and honor its deep-rooted heritage.
