嘉之助 Kanosuke Hioki Pot Still - The Rare Malt

嘉之助 Kanosuke Hioki Pot Still

Hioki Distillery has been in operation since 1883, renowned for its shochu production. In 2018, they expanded into gin, and by 2020, they started producing grain whisky.

The Hioki Pot Still whisky, although labeled under Kanosuke, is actually distilled at Hioki Distillery and then matured at Kanosuke. This is the brand's first Pot Still Whisky. Despite being classified as a grain whisky, it is made from unmalted and malted barley. Aged in American White Oak previously used for shochu and Bourbon Barrels. The subtropical climate of Kagoshima allows this whisky to develop rich aromas in just a few years.

On the nose, it offers creamy notes, apple pie, and ripe fruits like guava and banana. The palate explodes with creamy and marmalade sweetness, then it gives a long finish with citrus and ginger notes.

Kanosuke

Located on the Fukiagehama coast in Kagoshima, Kanosuke Distillery was founded by renowned shochu maker Komasa Jyozo. It is one of the few distilleries in southern Kyushu equipped with three different pot stills, enabling a wide range of whisky styles. The region’s ocean breeze and sunlight lend a mellow, beachy character that contrasts with typical Japanese whiskies.

Since distillation began in 2017, Kanosuke has released single malts featuring notes of vanilla, citrus, and baked sweets, primarily matured in bourbon casks. Led by master blender Kanosuke Komasa, the distillery blends local climate and elegant technique, ushering in a new wave of Japanese whisky innovation.
