German independent bottler Maltbarn has released two new series this time: “Planets” and “Fractals”. Martin, the man behind the brand, continues his usual style of cask selection, with both series once again featuring a diverse range of bottlings. Among them, this BenRiach 1995 from the Planets series is particularly distinctive.

Distilled in 1995, this BenRiach still belonged to the Seagram era. Unlike the modern BenRiach, which has a clearer identity and is centred around official distillery bottlings, the distillery at that time still supplied a considerable amount of spirit to the Seagram group for blending purposes. This Maltbarn BenRiach 1995 was finished in a sherry cask. On the nose, it opens with fresh notes of green apple and herbal elements, alongside pleasant aromas of honey and white flowers, while a mysterious touch of minerality appears in the background. The palate is smooth and sweet, with the mineral note becoming more apparent, followed by green and yellow fruits, honey, and gradually lighter hints of spice and oak. The finish remains oak-driven, with subtle fruit and herbal notes reappearing, balanced and gentle.

Other bottlings from the Planets series are also available, including the younger Dalmunach, Linkwood and Tullibardine, as well as a 17-year-old Balblair. All of them were matured in bourbon casks, offering a different direction from this sherry cask finished BenRiach.
