Caol Ila

Caol Ila is the largest distillery on Islay, established in 1846, and has long served as a key component in blended whiskies due to its efficient and consistent production. Named after the “Sound of Islay,” the distillery overlooks the scenic waters between Islay and Jura. Despite its large scale, Caol Ila remained under the radar for many years until single malt drinkers began to appreciate its subtler charms. Its signature style blends clean, balanced peat smoke with light fruitiness and a gentle maritime character, making it more refined than many of its Islay counterparts.

While much of its output goes into blends like Johnnie Walker, Caol Ila also offers a solid lineup of single malts, including the 12 Year Old and Distillers Edition. The distillery frequently participates in special cask projects and limited releases, demonstrating its versatility and innovation. With the opening of a new visitor center in 2022, Caol Ila has gained greater visibility, inviting whisky lovers to discover the understated power behind this Islay giant.

Douglas Laing

Douglas Laing is a renowned independent bottler from Scotland, founded in 1948 by Fred Douglas Laing. Now run by his son Fred Laing and granddaughter Cara Laing, the company is best known for the “Remarkable Regional Malts” series—including Big Peat, Scallywag, Timorous Beastie, Rock Island, and The Epicurean—that capture the character of different Scotch whisky regions. In addition to blended malts, they also offer single cask ranges such as Old Particular, XOP (Xtra Old Particular), and Premier Barrel, all bottled without chill filtration or added coloring to preserve the whisky’s original character.

Douglas Laing takes pride in its careful cask selection and natural presentation philosophy. In 2019, the company took a bold step by establishing The Clutha Distillery in Glasgow, marking its evolution from independent bottler to full-scale producer. Spanning three generations, Douglas Laing is celebrated for its deep cask inventory and commitment to quality, earning a loyal following among whisky enthusiasts worldwide.
