A centerpiece of the "Fragrant Collaboration" series, this experimental “Coffee Cask” expression is a joint project with Bankoku Coffee, a long-established coffee roaster from Yamagata. For Cask #3657, Nagahama’s peated malt underwent secondary maturation in bourbon casks previously used to store premium coffee beans, before being bottled at its natural cask strength. The marriage between the coffee-seasoned wood and Nagahama’s peated malt evokes the rich, intense aroma of dark-roasted coffee beans.

Official Tasting Notes:

Aroma: Dominated by a powerful scent of roasted coffee, followed closely by Nagahama’s delicate peat smoke with hints of caramel and bonfire-like char.

Palate: Beyond the prominent coffee flavor, earthy peat notes reminiscent of soil and ash emerge. Smooth, with coffee, malt sweetness, and peat smoke forming a harmonious balance.

Finish: Long with the lingering essence of smoke and roasted coffee.

Nagahama

Nagahama Distillery is located on the northeastern side of Lake Biwa in Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, and is affiliated with Nagahama Roman Beer. The initial stages of whisky production, including mashing and fermentation, take place in the brewery, while distillation begins at Nagahama Distillery. It uses Hoga Stills from Portugal, a smaller-capacity Alembic still, producing approximately 200 liters of new-make spirit per batch, enough to fill one oak barrel, following Nagahama’s unique “One distillation, one cask” method.

Their main product lines are Nagahama and Amahagan, which is Nagahama spelled backward. Nagahama is their own single malt whisky, while Amahagan is a blended series that combines whisky distilled in-house with whisky sourced from overseas.
