Glenallachie 19 Year Old - Masters of Wood Ex-Solera Sherry Cask Matured

Following the Mizunara release, this is the latest expression in the Masters of Wood series. For this edition, Billy Walker selected PX and Oloroso sherry casks that had held sherry in a traditional Solera system for over 55 years, using them for secondary maturation. As casks in a Solera system usually remain in continuous operation for long periods and are rarely removed for whisky maturation, ex-solera sherry casks are considered a particularly rare cask type, especially when compared with the sherry-seasoned casks commonly used today.

Official Tasting Notes:
Nose: Brandied plum, intense mocha and honeycomb, with caramel snaps, molasses tart and rich cocoa.
Taste: Plum syrup, treacle and warmed heather honey, followed by black cherries, mocha and brandied orchard fruits, with crystalised cinnamon and ginger.

Glenallachie

Founded in 1967, Glenallachie is a relatively young Speyside distillery originally built by Mackinlay McPherson for blending purposes. Located at the foot of Ben Rinnes, it was acquired by Pernod Ricard in 1989. In 2017, industry veteran Billy Walker and his team took over, transforming Glenallachie into a single malt-focused brand that quickly gained acclaim.

Under Walker’s direction, the distillery underwent a full overhaul—redefining cask management and emphasizing Sherry casks and specialty finishes. The result is a richer, sweeter house style with notes of dried fruit and spice. Flagship expressions like Glenallachie 12 Year Old and various limited editions showcase depth and personality, establishing the distillery as a rising Speyside star.
